Evil Eye in Babies: 5 Signs Every Parent Must Know & How to Protect Them
Your baby is beautiful. You post a photo of their first smile on Instagram, or you take them to a family gathering in London or Paris, and everyone coos over them.
But a few hours later, everything changes.
Your calm, happy baby is now screaming uncontrollably. They refuse to feed. They have a sudden fever with no medical cause. You feel helpless, and the doctors say it's just "colic."
As Muslim parents living in the West, we must remember what the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us:
"The evil eye is real, and if anything were to overtake the divine decree, it would be the evil eye." (Sahih Muslim)
Children, especially babies, are the most vulnerable to Al-Ayn (Evil Eye) because they are pure and attract attention, but they cannot protect themselves with Adhkar.
At Sunnah Diagnostic, we understand the panic parents feel. Here is a guide to the signs that your baby might be affected by the Evil Eye, and the authentic Sunnah methods to treat and protect them.
Why Are Babies So Vulnerable?
Babies are weak. Their spiritual "aura" or shield is not yet developed. They are entirely dependent on their parents for physical and spiritual protection.
The Evil Eye does not always come from malice. It can come from a loving grandparent, a stranger in the supermarket, or even you as a parent if you admire your child without saying "Masha'Allah" or "Barakallahu Feek" (May Allah bless you).
5 Signs Your Baby Might Be Affected
If your baby suddenly develops these symptoms after being exposed to people or having their photo shared, it could be the Evil Eye:
-
Unexplained, Intense Crying: Not the usual cry for hunger or a nappy change. This is screaming, arching of the back, and inconsolable distress that often starts suddenly, especially at night.
-
Sudden Refusal to Breastfeed/Feed: Your baby was feeding well, but suddenly pushes the breast or bottle away, cries when offered food, or vomits immediately after feeding.
-
Sudden Fever or Illness: A high temperature comes out of nowhere, and medical tests show no infection. Or, the baby develops strange skin rashes or eczema suddenly.
-
Change in Appearance: The baby’s face turns pale, yellowish, or dark. Their eyes look dull, tired, or they stare blankly at the ceiling.
-
Excessive Lethargy or Weakness: A previously active, kicking baby becomes limp, drowsy, and sleeps excessively but restlessly.
The Sunnah Cure & Protection Protocol
If you see these signs, do not panic. The cure is in the Sunnah, and it is powerful.
1. The "Instant Cure": Performing Ruqyah
The Prophet (saw) used to seek refuge for Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn. You must do this for your child.
-
Method: Place your right hand on your baby’s head or chest.
-
Recite:
-
Surah Al-Fatiha (7 times)
-
Ayatul Kursi
-
The 3 Quls (Ikhlas, Falaq, Naas) – 3 times each.
-
The Prophetic Dua: "U’eethuka bi kalimatillaahit-taammaati min kulli shaytaanin wa haammah, wa min kulli ‘aynin laammah." (I seek refuge for you in the perfect words of Allah from every devil and poisonous reptile, and from every evil eye).
-
-
Blow (Nafath): Blow gently onto the baby after reciting.
2. The "Protective Shield": Olive Oil Massage
Babies’ skin absorbs everything. Massaging them with Ruqyah oil creates a spiritual barrier.
-
Method: Take some Sunnah Diagnostic Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Recite the 3 Quls and Ayatul Kursi over it. Gently massage your baby’s body every evening before sleep. This not only protects them but also soothes colicky stomachs.
3. The "Wash" (Ghusl)
If you know who gave the eye, ask them to perform wudu and wash your baby with that water (as per the Hadith in Sahih Muslim). If you don't know, wash the baby with Ruqyah Water mixed with Sidr Leaves.
How to Prevent It (Daily Habits)
-
Always say "Masha'Allah": Train yourself and your family to say it immediately when seeing the baby or their achievements.
-
Cover Their Beauty: Do not constantly show off your baby, especially on social media to thousands of strangers.
-
Morning & Evening Adhkar: Recite the protective surahs over your children every single day, without fail.
Protect What Is Precious
Don't wait until your baby is screaming in pain. Prevention is better than cure. Make spiritual protection as essential as feeding and changing.
